SEAD Program
SEADs Mission: The Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth (SEAD) program empowers promising high school students from under-resourced backgrounds to thrive in high school and college and provides Dartmouth College students with transformative service and leadership opportunities.
SEAD operates three major programs:
SEAD I, II, III, IV Summer Programs (2-3 weeks each summer at Dartmouth)
SEAD Reunions (4-day weekend at Dartmouth in the fall or winter after each summer program)
SEAD Internships (10-week internships at partner high schools following each summer program)
SEAD Internship Details
The SEAD Internship program places five Dartmouth studentsone per schoolin each SEAD partner high school each Dartmouth term. While in the host school community, interns are expected to work during and after school hours, and balance the following time commitments:
working with the selected SEAD scholars (such as sitting-in on classes, supporting extra-curricular activities, aiding students in self-advocating, and helping with academics)
working with the school (often primarily through the schools Guidance Department) on programs focused on college access for the greater student body (such as planning college visits, helping with SAT prep, etc.)
INTERNSHIP DATES: Please see the top of this page for internship dates and application deadlines.
Within each term, the internship begins with an Orientation at Dartmouth for the first 3 days, and then ends at the end of a Debriefing at Dartmouth for the last 2 days. Your time follows the schools calendar (including holidays).
COMPENSATION: Each intern will be provided:
Free housing provided by SEAD and the host school community (e.g. room in local college or staff member's home)
$2,500 SEAD stipend that meets all his/her internship expenses (e.g., meals, transportation, incidentals)
Additional funding for Scholar Activity Expenses (e.g., college visits, extra-curricular activities, recreation, events)
ELIGIBILITY: Any Dartmouth undergraduate with his/her W13 or S13 terms as an Off-Term.
Interns must be extremely well organized, responsible and self-reliant. In addition, previous experience with youth, diversity programs, and/or education outreach programs is a significant plus, but is not required.
FAQ: TYPICAL DAY: In all SEAD schools, Interns are mentors and members of school staff, and a typical day for Interns:
Begins at or before the beginning of the school day (Interns often are given a desk in the Guidance Dept.)
Involves supervision and mentoring from the SEAD school site contact (guidance counselor or academic dean)
Includes some mix of work with SEAD scholars (sitting in on classes, mentoring, tutoring, encouraging self-advocacy, meeting over lunch, discussing issues with teachers and/or administrators, contacting families, etc.)
Includes some mix of work with the greater student body (supplementing college advising, organizing college visits, presenting about college experiences, and/or specialized projects/interests [ex: coaching, SAT prep, etc.])
Ends with offering afterschool help for students & programs, or social events such as a pizza dinner, bowling, etc.
